Highlights: Single-way strip footing design
Total floor area: 10,220m2 per building
Type: Resort
Designed and built in 2016. Completed and opened for use.

Based on the architect’s idea of a mini Boutique Hotel, with the elegance and mischievousness of youth. Located in the Cocobay Da Nang entertainment complex, the 5-storey buildings are in harmony with the landscape and the general modern atmosphere. The small, pretty apartments are fully equipped for relaxation and tourism needs, and are reasonably divided on each floor.
Structural framing
Flat concrete frame columns, hidden in the wall according to architectural aesthetic requirements and to increase sales area.

Simple floor beam diagram, mainly main beam connecting columns. Beam size ensures clear height for the rooms, enough to accommodate the central air conditioning system on the ceiling. At the toilet compartments, lower the concrete floor level locally according to drainage requirements.
Foundation structure

The survey results show that the geology of the construction area is very good. From the ground to a depth of more than 20m, there is a layer of fine sand, medium to dense. Therefore, compared to the scale of the project, choosing a shallow foundation is reasonable and economical. According to his train of thought, the design engineer considers the types of shallow foundations from cheap to expensive as follows:

A trial-and-error period shows that the one-way strip foundation is optimal for the construction load. The foundation runs along the main frame direction (the direction of the short side of the house), the remaining direction uses foundation beams connected together.
Foundation design calculation method:
– Step 1: Preliminary selection of foundation size
Foundation pile depth: according to the condition that the horizontal pressure of the soil is enough to bear the horizontal load transmitted to the column foot. (Refer to the excel table in the attached document).
Foundation width b is chosen so that: Column foot load divided by the foundation bottom area (bxl) is smaller than the ground strength. In which l is known, running along the entire length of the strip. Note that bxl
+ under each column foot (take half the length of the foundation) as shown in blue.
+ under the entire foundation (plus all column foot loads)
Preliminary selection of foundation beam size.
– Step 2: Calculating settlement
Calculate for the following cases: both a strip (adding the load of the column legs sitting on that strip) and a local single foundation according to the load transmission area under the column foot (as shown in the blue section above).
Calculate according to one of two methods depending on the size of the foundation: the Layer Addition method or the Linear Deformation Layer method with finite thickness.
Note that when calculating the settlement of a single foundation under a column foot, it is necessary to add the settlement due to the influence of adjacent foundations (yellow and purple foundations).
– Step 3: Designing the foundation wing. Calculating according to the rigid foundation diagram
Including checking the height of the foundation wing according to the shear condition and calculating the reinforcement in the foundation wing
– Step 4: Designing the foundation beam. Calculate the reinforcement according to the flexible foundation diagram – slab, beam on elastic foundation with the foundation coefficient equal to the load divided by the settlement in step 2.
– step 5: Repeat the above steps continuously to get the most optimal economic results: concrete volume, reinforcement, excavation volume.

Although the project is small in scale, it consists of many similar buildings. The design engineer needs to spend time and effort to calculate meticulously to ensure the project’s economy.
